I never made a stink about it…The rules go like this: The hold I had was a submission hold, so it doesn't matter what Bret does when we fall back, the ref first needs to check Bret's arm to see if he was still awake.
The referee counted me out, 1-2-3, and that's the wrong call. We both went backwards and he pulled his feet over my head, which pins my shoulders, but I still have the sleeper hooked. The Inside Scoop: Roddy Piper on why he thinks he should've won the match: "If you take a look at the match, this is the way it came down: The way Bret pinned me, I put the sleeper on him and he kicked the turnbuckle. Hart gets busted open, there's a bulldog, biting, slaps to the face, double clotheslines, a split crowd, and plenty of action that ends with Piper locking in the sleeper and Hart jumping up to the top rope and falling back on Piper for the pin. Piper comes back with a slap and it's on.
Two of the icons of the sport going "eye to eye, nose to nose," or as Bobby The Brain says: "Two ugly people looking at each other, that's fun." Another Brain classic from the match: "A real champion doesn't spit, he'd eye gouge him." Anyway, Hart fakes an injury then tries to small package Piper. This is back when holding the IC belt really meant something. The Greatness: The pre-match interview is classic Piper: "I remember when they were changing your potty pants…you weren't potty trained until you were 7." The match is even better. Piper legit? That's like Paris Hilton joining the convent. The Holy Sh!t moment: The ref is knocked out and Piper looks to smack Hart with the ring bell, then stops and tries to win the match legit. Roddy Piper (Wrestlemania 8) The Match: Two old friends (and fan favorites) battle it out in one of the best Intercontinental title matches in history. YES NO So here they are, my list of the 20 Greatest Wrestlemania Matches… 20. As I tried to sit down and rank the matches, I tried to factor in everything from the action in the ring to the historical significance of the match, and in the end I'm sure some will agree, some will write hate mail and tell me I forgot about the beatdown between Kane and The Undertaker, and others will take the list for what it is…one man's rankings of the best Mania has had to offer. Shawn to Edge flying headfirst into fire.
Watching the DVDs brought back so many memories, memories of my family gathered to watch Hulk battle Andre, memories of my dad talking about the greatness of Bret Hart, memories of being in the crowd and witnessing everything from Kurt vs. There were midgets, old timers, celebrities, old timer midgets (where are the old timer midget celebrities?), The Fridge, Lawrence Taylor, and even Cathie Lee Crosby blurting out "This is the first wrestling match I've ever been to," when the British Bulldogs and Dream Team were in the middle of a frenzied fight for the tag belts. Want to know what watching over 200 matches does to your brain (and relationship with your wife)? Let's just say you know you've watched too much Wrestlemania when you start to notice things like Miss Elizabeth's dress in III not quite fitting right so she used pins to hold it together (wife pointed that one out), you remember that the confetti bazookas Shawn Michaels shoots into the crowd in XIX fail to work with number three, Ozzy Osbourne was once somewhat coherent, and that at one time Cowboy Bob Orton wore a pink hat. I just watched every Wrestlemania on DVD in one week.
